Birmingham Royal Ballet is delighted to announce its first audio described performance of its spectacular production The Nutcracker.

On Sunday 11 December the 1pm performance of The Nutcracker will come alive as the action on stage is described live through headsets by an audio describer.

Audio description in theatre and ballet is a commentary for people with sight problems who have difficulty seeing the stage. It helps them to follow what is going on by describing the essential action, body language, facial expressions, costumes and scenery.

The performance will be preceded by the opportunity to take part in a touch tour at 10.30am which is designed to aid those with visual impairments to get the most from a performance. The visually impaired patrons will go on stage and backstage and have the opportunity to get up close to a selection of costumes, props and dancers as well as to ask questions about the production and learn some of the dance vocabulary which is used in the live description.

Approximately 15 minutes before curtain up, the live description begins with a recap of the synopsis, characters, costumes and sets, and details the cast for the forthcoming performance. As the curtain rises, the audio description synchronises with the choreography.

Keith Longmore, Director of Communications for Birmingham Royal Ballet added, ‘Birmingham Hippodrome already provides audio described productions throughout the course of the year and this is something that we have been really keen to get involved with at Birmingham Royal Ballet. Our world famous production of The Nutcracker attracts around 40,000 people to Birmingham Hippodrome every year, and if we can open this up to even more people then this is great for everyone involved. Many individuals see ballet as a purely visual art, but the harmonious mix of music, magic, dance and the delightful festive story that The Nutcracker provides will hopefully provide the visually impaired audience members with an equally wonderful experience to remember.’
